Seafront pool at Pestana São Tomé hotel

Where to Stay

Hotels in São Tomé
The Honest Guide

Accommodation in São Tomé ranges from a full-service seafront resort to small family-run guesthouses. This guide covers the main options across every budget, with honest notes on location and what to expect.

A note on taxis

Taxis in São Tomé do not use meters. Drivers at the bigger hotels often quote prices in euros - sometimes significantly above the local rate. The going rate for a city-centre journey in dobras is generally 20 to 30 dobras for a moto - no helmet supplied, or 100 for a taxi. Ask at your hotel for the correct local fare before you get in. Better still, hire a car for the week - it is cheaper than you might expect and makes getting around considerably easier.

Upmarket

Infinity pool at Pestana São Tomé with palm trees and ocean view

Pestana São Tomé

5-Star Seafront Hotel

Seafront, near the embassy district

The Pestana São Tomé is the island's only full-service 5-star hotel, sitting on the seafront in the embassy and government district, around 1km from the city centre. It is the largest and most comprehensively equipped hotel on the island.

The hotel has 115 rooms and suites with sea or garden views, an infinity pool overlooking the water, a private beach area, spa with Turkish bath and sauna, fully equipped gym, restaurant, bar and casino. All rooms have air conditioning, minibar and satellite TV. Breakfast is served as a buffet. There are five meeting rooms and a conference centre. Free WiFi and free parking are included. The hotel can arrange airport transfers and boat transfers to Ilhéu das Rolas.

It is not a walking distance hotel. The city centre is around 20 minutes on foot and taxis from the hotel door will try their luck with tourist prices. Do not pay more than 100 dobras for a trip into town. The hotel will sort a car if you need one, which is the better option for a longer stay.

The Friday BBQ runs weekly with live entertainment and draws both guests and locals - worth knowing if you are there on a Friday.

Garden and outdoor pool at Pestana Miramar São Tomé

Pestana Miramar São Tomé

4-Star Hotel

Tropical garden, close to city centre

The Miramar is the second Pestana property on the island - a 4-star hotel set in a tropical garden close to the city centre, with a pool and direct beach access. CNN included it in a list of the 20 best places to visit in 2020.

The hotel has 59 rooms across several categories including Classic, Standard, Superior, Junior Suite and Suite. Facilities include an outdoor pool, tropical garden, the Le Baron restaurant serving Santomean, Portuguese and international cuisine with wood-fired pizzas, two bars including a poolside bar, free WiFi and free parking. Guests staying at the Miramar can use the spa, gym and sauna at the main Pestana São Tomé.

The garden setting makes it feel more relaxed and intimate than the main Pestana. The wood-fired pizzas at Le Baron are a reason to eat in rather than go out. There is a good chicken place just outside the hotel if you want something simple and local. The bar on the roundabout is worth knowing about if you do not want to pay hotel prices for a drink.

The Estádio Nacional is a short walk away. Sunday nights there is often a party - it moved from Micolo and can be loud. Worth knowing if you are a light sleeper.

Worth knowing

The road outside has been affected by roadworks - worth bearing in mind on arrival.

Omali São Tomé boutique hotel exterior with tropical gardens and palm trees

Omali São Tomé

4-Star Boutique Hotel

Ana Chaves bay, 2km from city centre

Omali sits directly on Ana Chaves bay, roughly 2km from the city centre, with the beach in front of it. It is operated by the Principe Collection and is the highest-rated hotel on the island by TripAdvisor reviewer score.

The hotel has 30 rooms and suites, including a family suite sleeping four. Facilities include an outdoor pool in palm-fringed gardens, a poolside bar, restaurant specialising in fresh seafood and local cuisine, gym, tennis court and free private parking. All rooms include air conditioning, minibar, satellite TV, safe and coffee-making facilities. Breakfast is included in the rate.

The beachfront location is the main reason to choose it. The beach outside is used by locals on Sunday afternoons - relaxed, genuinely friendly, and a good place to spend time without being hassled. The seafood restaurant is the strongest card in the evenings. Classic rooms are on the smaller side - worth upgrading if the budget allows.

Insider tip

If you would rather not deal with taxis, we can arrange an airport transfer - sometimes it is just nicer to have someone waiting. We also hire cars if you want to get out and explore at your own pace.

If you feel like walking into the city rather than taking a taxi, there is a shortcut worth knowing. Head towards the city and take the track that turns left next to the closed car dealership - it runs along the ocean through a local community. At sunset it is one of the nicer walks on the island. Take a torch if you are coming back after dark, and expect crabs on the path. Jellyfish often pack in tight along this stretch, and catch it right and you will see dolphins - sometimes wall to wall.

Eco-Lodge

Open-air dining area at Mucumbli Ecolodge on the north-west coast of São Tomé

Mucumbli Ecolodge

Eco-Lodge

North-west coast, near Neves

Mucumbli is an eco-lodge on the north-west coast, near Neves. It is owned and run by Italian couple Tiziano and Mari Pisoni, who have lived on the island for over 20 years. It started as a place for family and friends and has grown into what it is today. The focus is on creating employment in the Lemba district - one of the least economically developed parts of the island.

Wooden chalets are built with local materials, all with private en-suite bathrooms and spacious verandas facing the ocean. Rooms have ceiling fans rather than air conditioning. WiFi is in the restaurant area. The restaurant serves Italian and Santomean cooking using home-grown produce. Breakfast and dinner are available. The fish of the day is worth ordering.

A short walk leads down to a beach of dark volcanic sand - bring water shoes, the path is steep and the shoreline is rocky. Turtles nest on the beach between November and March. Humpback whales and dolphins are seen offshore between July and October. The lodge organises trekking, bird watching, cycling, roça tours, whale watching and dolphin watching. Bike hire and car hire are available.

Mucumbli is not a city hotel and not a beach resort. It is a place to slow down, eat well and use as a base for exploring the north of the island properly.
